Using educational programs that mirror some of the games the children play helps us capture their attention and interest in progressing to the next level. Establishing a little Friendly competition between individuals or a team also helps to motivate.
Children when allowed will select the tutor they want. Mrs. LaZard was a favorite of the children as she quietly encouraged their reading. Some of the kids would arrive early so they could get to Mrs. Lazard first.
It was amazing how fast the younger kids caught on to how the computer works. So often they would tell me how to set up a program, what it was supposed to do and how to make it happen. I learned so much while I was trying to teach them.
Getting ready for a performance is sometimes difficult from the start but once the children hear themselves harmonizing and sounding like angels, they become angels, anxiously looking forward to every rehearsal. Pamela could/can bring out the best in the little darlings.
Teaching children to create, to work with their hands, making objects out of scraps of material can be a lot of fun with surprising results. What makes it more rewarding is having an art teacher who is good with the children and exceptional with his craft, like Mr. Thurman.
Quiet time at the Academy was nap time for the younger ones and read time for those who believed they were too old for naps.
You are never too old to learn. These senior citizens did not progress as fast as the little ones but were determined to be better at the end of class than when they started.
Technology will continue to advance sometimes faster than we expect. So, we want to build a team of young people prepared for the future. What better way to do that than have them understand how a technology works, how to correct any problems that arise, understand what each part of it is supposed to do and be proficient in its use.
These young men are eager to break the systems down, but the real thrill is putting them back together in working condition. The feat seems impossible at the beginning of the class but at the end these young men can build the units themselves.
Young people are also learning to sew and make costumes for our performances. For ones who show promise with the sewing receive a sewing kit or a small sewing machine at the end of the session.
